CLP said on Monday that a cable bridge fire in Yuen Long that caused a major blackout in June was related to a low-voltage electrical installation near the bridge.

Some 160,000 households in the northwestern New Territories were affected by the blaze.

In a final report submitted to the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD), the power company also said it believes the fire started near the bridge's Kwong Yip Street entrance.

CLP said it has taken several remedial measures since the incident, such as replacing similar electrical installations that may lead to a fire, and installing more fire protection and firefighting devices.

"The EMSD and independent third-party experts are reviewing the report in detail, evaluating whether the identified cause is well-founded and remedial measures are appropriate," the department said in a statement.

It added that the firm is assessing the risks at relevant power transmission facilities, as it reviews contingency measures and plans future drills.

The department said it will ask CLP to provide more information if necessary, as it asked the company to publicise the details of the report at an opportune time.

It added that it will closely monitor the company's implementation of remedial measures.
