The Hong Kong Observatory said it may consider issuing the T8 signal between 6pm to 9pm on Wednesday as severe tropical storm Ma-on edges closer towards the Pearl River Estuary.
The Observatory issued the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 at 12.40pm as the storm moves towards western Guangdong.
It also warned that the storm should be closest to Hong Kong on Thursday morning, and may skirt within about 200 kilometres south-southwest of Hong Kong, posing a considerable threat to the city.
The Observatory warned that there would be rough to high seas and swells, and urged the public to take precautions against strong winds and flooding.
