President Xi Jinping on Friday called on Russia and other members of a regional grouping to support each other in preventing foreign powers from instigating "colour revolutions" in their countries.

Delivering his speech at a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in the city of Samarkand, Xi said member states, including India, Pakistan, Russia and four Central Asian nations, should work together to make the world order more “just”.

Xi told leaders they should "work together to promote the development of the international order in a more just and rational direction".

He then repeated a call for all countries to stop "zero-sum games and bloc politics" as well as "uphold the international system with the United Nations at its core".

Xi also said that China will train 2,000 law enforcement personnel from member countries over the next five years and set up a training base focusing on anti-terrorism work.

He invited member countries to sign up to China's Global Security Initiative, a concept he proposed in April which includes the idea that no country should strengthen its own security at the expense of others.

The president's comments come a day after he said Beijing is willing to work with Moscow as “great powers” in his first meeting with Vladimir Putin, since Russia launched its attack on Ukraine.

Putin had thanked President Xi for his “balanced” approach to the Ukrainian crisis and acknowledged Beijing’s “questions and concerns” regarding the conflict. He said Moscow will offer a detailed explanation.

Before making his speech, Xi met Iranian leader Ebrahim Raisi and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

During his meeting with Erdogan, he said "political mutual trust" between the two sides must be boosted.

He also said the two countries should contribute to safeguarding international industrial and supply chains, food and energy security. (Agencies)
