Washington has named Gregory May as the new head of the United States Consulate in Hong Kong and Macau.
He arrived in Hong Kong on Friday.
In a statement, May said: "I am honoured to represent the people of the United States here in Hong Kong and Macau. I look forward to getting to know the diverse people who live in Hong Kong and Macau and building on our longstanding relationships, shared interests, and values."
The diplomat has previously served as the consul general in Shenyang, and also worked at the US Consulate in Guangzhou and the US embassy in Beijing.
He also worked as a journalist for a radio station in Taiwan between 1993 and 1996 before joining the US government.
