The nation's ruling Communist Party will open its national congress on Sunday during which President Xi Jinping is expected to be given a renewed mandate.
The roughly week-long congress will take place with around 2,300 delegates, mostly behind closed doors, in the Great Hall of the People on Tiananmen Square.
The high-level conclave will also see a reshuffle of the Politburo Standing Committee.
It will conclude with the introduction of the members of China's top decision-making body, which now numbers seven and that Xi has come to dominate.
