Beijing mayor Chen Jining has been appointed Communist Party secretary of Shanghai, succeeding Li Qiang who is now the second-ranked state leader.
Chen, 58, was named a member of the Politburo at the recently concluded 20th party congress.
Chen became mayor of Beijing in 2018. He previously served as minister of environmental protection and president of Tsinghua University.
Li, 63, became a Politburo Standing Committee member at the 20th party congress. (Additional reporting by Xinhua)
