The Chinese embassy in South Korea confirmed on Sunday that four Chinese nationals were among those killed in a stampede in the Itaewon district of Seoul on Saturday night during Halloween celebrations. Two others, meanwhile, suffered minor injuries.

The embassy said it had activated an emergency response mechanism on learning of the stampede and offered help to the victims. It extended condolences to the families of the deceased and said it would provide necessary assistance.

The incident has left at least 153 dead and 82 injured, according to South Korean authorities.

The South Korean president Yoon Suk-yeol has announced a period of national mourning.

"This is truly tragic," he said in a statement. "A tragedy and disaster that should not have happened took place in the heart of Seoul last night." (Additional reporting from Xinhua)
