The Observatory issued the Standby Signal Number 1 on Sunday night, and said the signal will stay in force at least before 10am on Monday.

It issued the alert at 10.10pm.

Severe Tropical Storm Nalgae is forecast to enter the northern part of the South China Sea later on Monday and to stay more than 400 kilometres from Hong Kong.

Forecasters say local winds are expected to strengthen gradually over the next couple of days, under the combined influence of Nalgae and a northeast monsoon.

They advised the public to check for weather updates before leaving home in the morning, and urged people to stay away from the shoreline and not to do water sports.

They also advised caution for people who planned to work outdoors or go hiking.
