The Hong Kong Observatory has said the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 will remain in effect before noon on Wednesday, and that it will consider issuing the No 8. Gale or Storm Signal between noon and 2 pm.

All school classes are suspended for the day in view of the possible storm signal upgrade.

At 6 am, severe tropical storm Nalgae was estimated to be about 250 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong and was forecast to move northwest or north-northwest at about 10 kilometres per hour towards the west of the Pearl River estuary.

"Although Nalgae will weaken gradually, its degree of weakening remains uncertain," the Observatory said.

"According to the latest forecast track, it will be very close to the vicinity of the Pearl River estuary later today, skirting within around 150 kilometres to the south of the territory."

It added that local winds will strengthen further, and change gradually from northerlies to easterlies, while showers are expected to become more frequent.

The Education Bureau announced at 5:30 am that classes in all schools are suspended on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Social Welfare Department advised people not to take their children or family members to child care centres, elderly services centres or day rehabilitation units.

But it said these centres will remain open during normal operating hours to serve those whose families cannot provide alternative care for them.

Some bus services provided by the Kowloon Motor Bus company catering to students are suspended. Some ferry routes - including those between Tuen Mun and Tai O, and Aberdeen and Po Toi Island - are also suspended.
