Guangdong province on Sunday reported 1,582 new local Covid infections – up from 888 the day before – with authorities offering door-to-door PCR tests in a district in Guangzhou where most of the cases were found.

Most of the recent Covid infections in Guangdong were asymptomatic, while the Guangzhou Municipal Health Commission said all but nine of the city’s 1,325 local cases were detected in quarantined or high-risk areas.

Authorities have stepped up measures to reduce the movement of people in Haizhu district, and have arranged door-to-door PCR testing there.

The commission said the Covid situation in Guangzhou is now at a crucial stage and urged people in control areas not to go outside.

"Officers found out from [security camera] footage that some people still violated control measures," Zhang Yi, deputy director of the Guangzhou Health Commission, said.

"They moved water barricades, went out without permission, or gave each other things, leading to new positive cases in neighbouring districts that were not categorised as medium or high-risk areas. The relevant department is now investigating and will plug the loophole," she added.

A total of 4,420 local coronavirus cases were reported on the mainland.
