For the first time in three years, wreath layers were able to go up to the Cenotaph in Central without Covid restrictions for the Remembrance Day ceremony.

There was a full contingent of religious representatives for the annual event.

The only World War II veteran in attendance was John T. Siewert, 98, who regularly visits Hong Kong for the ceremonies.

The D-Day veteran steered US destroyer the USS Satterlee off Omaha Beach during the Allied invasion of Normandy, northern France to break Germany’s Atlantic Wall on June 6, 1944, and for 30 days afterwards.

He has been awarded the French Legion of Honour, among other medals.

"This is an annual occasion for me and it is remembering those that went to war and did not come back to their homes. I was very fortunate," Siewert said.
