The Commissioner of Police, Raymond Siu, on Saturday said officers had met staff members of the Hong Kong Rugby Union and collected their communication records as part of their investigation into the use of a wrong song in place of the national anthem at a rugby competition earlier this month.

The incident happened in South Korea and the song mistakenly played was associated with the violent protests of 2019.

Mr Siu added that the force could get in touch with their counterparts from overseas law enforcement agencies via established mechanisms to exchange intelligence if needed.

Meanwhile, the Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Kevin Yeung has said the mix-up didn't appear to be politically motivated.

“At this stage, we have no evidence to show that there’s any political move behind the incident,” he said.

“At the same time, the police are still carrying out its investigations, so we could not really come to a conclusion.”
