A government advisor on the pandemic, David Hui, said on Saturday that he expects the current wave of Covid cases to peak in a week or two.

The Chinese University professor said there's no need to worry about the epidemic situation, saying most infections have been mild and the public healthcare system has been coping well with the situation.

"The tier one isolation rooms [at public hospitals], we're only using about half. Tier two, we're using about one third. We actually prevented a lot of mild cases from being admitted to hospital," he told reporters after attending a Commercial Radio programme.

"So as long as the public healthcare system is still functioning well, there's no reason to tighten social distancing measures."

Case numbers have hovered around 10,000 for the past couple of days.

Hui said it's a cause for concern that the number of residential care homes with Covid outbreaks have more than doubled within November, to around 79 last week.

Around a third of the residents have been re-infected despite being triple-jabbed. He said the best way to tackle the problem was for residents to receive the BioNTech bivalent vaccine, which also protects against the more recent Omicron variant.
