The nation's capital dropped the need for people to show negative Covid-19 tests to enter supermarkets and offices on Tuesday, the latest in an easing of curbs across the country.

"Beijing readies itself for life again" read a headline in the China Daily newspaper, adding that people were "gradually embracing" the slow return to normality.

The number of new Covid-19 cases on the mainland, meanwhile, dropped further.

The National Health Commission reported 4,988 locally transmitted and 22,859 asymptomatic infections for Monday, excluding imported cases.

The tally of 27,847 was down from 29,724 the day before.

Guangdong again topped all provinces and regions with 5,541 infections, while the daily caseload in Beijing reached 4,666.

No new deaths were reported.

Overall cases have dropped as cities across the country ease restrictions and Covid testing requirements. (Reuters/Xinhua)
