Hong Kong's delegate to the country's top legislature Tam Yiu-chung said on Wednesday that he thinks the SAR and the mainland will soon resume quarantine-free travel.

He said he hopes the authorities can make good preparations for the resumption, so that everything will be safe and orderly.

"Once the [quarantine-free] travel resumes, there may be a lot of people wanting to cross the border at the same time. It's no good if chaos arises," Tam told reporters before departing for Beijing for a meeting next week of the National People's Congress Standing Committee (NPCSC).

He said at the moment, there is nothing relating to Hong Kong on the agenda for the meeting.

Tam noted that the SAR government has asked the NPCSC for an interpretation of the national security law, over whether overseas lawyers can represent defendants in national security trials.

He said he has no update on this, stressing that if there is no other way to handle the issue, then an interpretation is a feasible option.

The government has asked for an interpretation after failing to convince the courts to block a British lawyer from representing former media tycoon Jimmy Lai who faces various charges relating to national security.
