President Xi Jinping on Friday affirmed the work of the chief executive, and spelled out his hopes for Hong Kong's future.

The meeting was the highlight of John Lee's first duty visit to Beijing since taking office in July.

Xi told Lee that the central authorities fully acknowledged the work the chief executive and his administration has done.

"Since you became the chief executive, you have led the new SAR government to be courageous and pragmatic, resolutely safeguard national security, vigorously revive economic vitality, actively respond to people's concerns, and show a new atmosphere of patriots administering Hong Kong," he said.

"Hong Kong is making steady progress on the right track of One Country, Two Systems. The central government fully recognises your work and that of the SAR government."

Xi said the central government will continue to implement the One Country, Two Systems principle, fully support the governance of the chief executive and the SAR administration, as well as its efforts in starting extensive international cooperation and better integrating into the national development.

"In this new era, on this new journey, Hong Kong will have great potential and shine brightly," Xi said.

Lee, for his part, thanked the president for his ongoing concern and support for Hong Kong, as well as his guidance and encouragement.

He also quoted Xi who said in his July 1 speech and 20th party national congress report that the principle of One Country, Two Systems must be adhered to over the long run.

"People from all across Hong Kong have been encouraged and expressed their support, while the international community has also responded positively. The confidence and support for One Country, Two Systems are obvious, tangible, and enthusiastic," Lee said.

Meanwhile, state media reported that Premier Li Keqiang had told Lee that China will promote the gradual resumption of the normal movement of people between Hong Kong and the mainland.

The CE is expected to wrap up his four-day visit and return to Hong Kong on Saturday.
