The Foreign Ministry Commissioner's Office in Hong Kong has condemned remarks by the US consul general on the recent interpretation of the national security law by the National People's Congress Standing Committee.

At an online forum, Gregory May said Beijing's interpretation last month expanded the power of Hong Kong's executive branch and could damage judicial independence here.

In a statement, the Office of the Commissioner of the Foreign Ministry said those comments disparaged the national security law and its interpretation by the country's top legislature, and spoke ill of Hong Kong's business environment.

It described the interpretation – relating to the involvement of overseas lawyers in national security cases – as legal and appropriate, and welcomed by various sectors of society.

The office also said any attempts to destabilise China or Hong Kong are doomed to fail.

The SAR government also condemned May's remarks. In a statement, the government said it's firmly against any biased comments on its efforts to safeguard national security.
