Police commissioner Raymond Siu, who reaches retirement age this April, is to stay on for another two years.
He will remain in his position until April 1, 2025.
Announcing the decision on Thursday, the government said the extension is to "facilitate a smooth transition of the senior management of the Hong Kong Police Force".
Siu was appointed as the police chief in June 2021, succeeding Chris Tang who became the secretary for security under Chief Executive John Lee's government.
