A magnitude 4.5 earthquake was recorded in Guangdong early Wednesday – the third tremor felt by Hongkongers in the past two months.
Mainland authorities said the quake took place at 5:15am, near Dongyuan county in Heyuan, some 180 kilometres north of the SAR.
No casualties have been reported.
The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) said more than a hundred SAR residents reported that they felt the quake for a few seconds.
"Initial estimate gave a local intensity of four on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale, meaning that hanging objects swing, and dishes, windows and doors rattle," the HKO said on social media.
Last month, the observatory said earthquakes were recorded in Foshan and Heyuan.
