The Chinese consulate general in Los Angeles on Tuesday said any meeting between Taiwan’s Tsai Ing-wen and US House speaker Kevin McCarthy would be a violation of the One-China principle.
The statement comes after the top Republican from California confirmed he would meet Tsai on Wednesday.
A spokesman from the consulate general said the meeting between the two would not be conducive to regional peace, security and stability.
The consulate added it would not in the common interests of the people of China and the United States.
Tsai plans to stop over in the United States on her return from Central America, where she has met the leaders of Guatemala and is visiting Belize before meeting McCarthy.
The speaker’s office said on Monday the "bipartisan" meeting will take place at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, just outside Los Angeles. (Reuters/AFP)
