Veteran local actor and comedian Richard Ng has died at the age of 83.

With his trademark moustache and deadpan expression, he played alongside other well-known local stars such as Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan, Andy Lau and Eric Tsang.

Ng was best known for his role in the 1983 film ‘Winners and Sinners’, a comedy where he played a man who believed he could become invisible and pranked his friends.

It was for that film the actor got his first nomination for Best Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards. He was nominated again in 1989 for ‘Beyond the Sunset’.

But Ng's acting career – which spanned five decades – did not begin in Hong Kong.

He got his first role as a walk-on in Charlie Chaplin's ‘A Countess from Hong Kong’, after studying drama in the United Kingdom.

Ng started writing television comedy when he returned to Hong Kong in 1970, and subsequently got into acting.

The veteran actor also hosted a popular prank show on television called ‘Fun Time’ in the late 1980s.

Ng continued to act late in life, and produced works such as RTHK's ‘Storage Stories’ in 2016.

His death was confirmed by the spokesperson of the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers, Tenky Tin. Ng had suffered from kidney failure and other health problems.

Ng is survived by his wife Susan and four children, including actor Carl Ng.
