Hong Kong's first floating storage and regasification unit vessel arrived in the city's waters on Thursday.

The vessel, named the Bauhinia Spirit, is part of a project by Hong Kong's two power companies aimed at improving natural gas supply and obtaining natural gas at competitive prices from the global market.

With a length of 345 metres and 263,000 cubic metres in volume, the Bauhinia Spirit is the world's largest vessel for receiving, storing, and converting liquefied natural gas (LNG) back to natural gas.

It is currently at the South Cheung Chau Anchorage and will sail and dock at the offshore LNG terminal east of the Soko Islands next week.

The offshore terminal is the first in Hong Kong to support energy transition and is scheduled to begin operating by the middle of the year.
