Authorities on Tuesday said motorists will no longer be able to charge their electric vehicles for free at some government-owned car parks later this year.

In papers submitted to the Legislative Council, the Environmental Protection Department said self-service payment kiosks will be installed at several public car parks over the next few months.

Works have commenced at the Kwai Fong Car Park and tests will start soon.

The government said it hopes the move will create an incentive for more private car parks to provide paid charging facilities for electric vehicles.

Meanwhile, authorities said they will require all parking spaces within newly-built buildings to be fully equipped with medium chargers, adding that revisions to the Planning Standards and Guidelines should be completed this year.
