The Transport Department on Wednesday said all traffic lights were working normally again, after it had earlier warned motorists to take care when driving around Hong Kong Island. This followed a voltage dip early this morning, which caused traffic lights in the area to malfunction and power outages elsewhere.

The Fire Services Department said the voltage dip happened at 12.45 am, causing fire alarms to go off with some people being trapped in lifts.

Power was restored two hours later but the Transport Department urged people passing through Central, Western, Eastern, Southern and Wan Chai districts to take care. Commuters were advised to make alternative travel arrangements or leave early to get to school or work on time.

Hongkong Electric said it was investigating the cause.
