Top Beijing and Hong Kong officials on Thursday attended a flag-raising ceremony at Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai to commemorate the 104th anniversary of the May Fourth Movement.

Guests, including Chief Secretary Eric Chan and liaison office deputy head Chen Dong officiated at the ceremony.

A group of young people made a declaration and took an oath, saying they would love the country and uphold its sovereignty, love Hong Kong, and help open a new chapter for the city.

The May Fourth Movement in 1919 was sparked by a demonstration of university students in Beijing who gathered in Tiananmen Square to protest against the transfer of Chinese territories previously controlled by Germany to Japan.
