A number of political parties and groups on Friday set up street booths across the city to promote the government's plan to change the way district councillors are selected, collecting signatures from people backing the move.

Chief Executive John Lee was at a booth in Wan Chai in the morning, along with members of the DAB party and Federation of Trade Unions.

In a Facebook post, the CE said he is glad that the plan has been welcomed by the public.

DAB chairwoman Starry Lee, meanwhile, said she believes there will still be different voices on the councils after the revamp.

But she warned that councillors must express their opinions in a way that does not "drag down" the administration's governance.

Lee noted that she has been a district councillor for more than two decades, adding that she will not stand in the next polls.
