The government's new electronic auto-toll system, known as HKeToll, came into operation at 5 am on Sunday at the Tsing Sha Control Area, which is made up of the Eagle's Nest, Sha Tin Heights and Tai Wai tunnels. Manual toll booths and Autopass lanes there have been cancelled.

Earlier, connecting roads were temporarily closed while staff changed signs and made other adjustments.

Drivers who don't have a tag will instead be sent a bill for their tunnel use.

On Friday, the Commissioner for Transport, Rosanna Law, said over 85 percent of the city's cars had registered for the system.

Officials aim to extend HKeToll to all government tunnels later this year.
