The chairman of the Hong Kong Football Association said his group will step up monitoring after eleven First Division players were arrested on Monday on suspicion of match-fixing.

The footballers, reportedly from the Happy Valley Athletic Association, were among 23 people arrested in the case.

Speaking on an RTHK programme on Wednesday, Pui Kwan-kay said while the association has been keeping a close eye on the Premier League matches, it is harder to monitor lower-level games.

"We have a lot of matches and teams. Apart from the First, Second and Third Divisions, the Football Association organises a lot of youth and women [football] matches," he said.

Pui urged the various football teams to do more to promote ethical and moral conduct.
