The Hong Kong Observatory warned of possible flash floods in the northern New Territories on Tuesday morning as the area was lashed by heavy rain.

It said more than 70 millimetres of hourly rainfall was recorded in Pat Heung, Kam Tin, San Tin and Ngau Tam Mei. Residents in those areas are advised to take necessary precautions against flood damage, and to stay away from watercourses.

The amber rainstorm warning and the thunderstorm warning were also in force, with the Observatory saying intense gusts of wind reaching 80 kilometres per hour or above may affect the territory.

The amber warning was cancelled at 8.45am. The special announcement on flooding in the Northern New Territories was cancelled at 9.20am.

Members of the public were urged to seek safe shelter as soon as possible.
