The Observatory on Saturday evening issued the amber rainstorm warning and cautioned people in Tai Po and Sai Kung districts of a major risk of flooding.

The warning took effect at 8pm as heavy rain and thunderstorms affected eastern parts of the territory. It was scheduled to remain in effect until at least 10.30pm but was cancelled at 9.15pm.

In a localised heavy rain advisory issued at the same time, the Observatory said: "Rain is particularly heavy in Tai Po District and Sai Kung District, with more than 70 millimetres of hourly rainfall fallen or expected to fall and may cause serious flooding."
