Hongkongers will get to enjoy a range of freebies as well as cheaper groceries and meals as the city celebrates the 26th anniversary of its return to the motherland on July 1, the Chief Executive announced on Tuesday.

"There will be many activities in celebration of the anniversary, so that everyone can have a good time," John Lee said ahead of the weekly Executive Council meeting.

Members of the public can enjoy free admission to the M+ Museum and seven exhibitions at the Hong Kong Palace Museum on the day, along with most government-run recreational facilities.

Most ferry rides will be free on July 1, and commuters can also get on the tram for free for the first five days of next month.

Lee added that some local fish and vegetable products will be marked at 71 percent of their original price for a week if they are purchased through a mobile app, and more than 1,000 restaurants will offer a 29 percent discount on part of their menus.

The CE, however, cautioned against possible disruptions on the day, saying such celebrations had been hijacked before.

"We cannot be complacent... We need to be mindful of people hijacking the occasion or creating undesirable atmosphere on those occasions," Lee warned.

"For those people, we will hold them to account, and we will not allow anyone to try to hijack such joyous occasions."
