Beijing's top official in Hong Kong has praised the work of Chief Executive John Lee's government, saying people's lives have improved in the past year as the SAR celebrates the 26th anniversary of the return to the motherland.

Speaking at the launch ceremony at Victoria Park of three days of festivities there, Zheng Yanxiong, director of the central government's liaison office in Hong Kong, said efficient and orderly leadership in the past 12 months led to a continuous improvement in people's lives.

Saturday also marks Lee's first year in office.

“We are happy to see that over the past year, national sovereignty, security and development interests have been effectively safeguarded, and Hong Kong has gradually emerged from the political quagmire," Zheng said.

"The lovely Hong Kong from the past is back.

“Everyone is more aware that Hong Kong can no longer go in the wrong direction or create chaos for itself, nor can it be manipulated or deceived by others. Everyone is more aware that the more solid the country is, the more splendid 'One Country, Two Systems' will be.”

The celebratory event at Victoria Park, which runs from Friday to Sunday, features various activities and exhibits.

Visitors can try on nearly 150 sets of fancy clothing from Tang Dynasty at the Chinese Culture Exhibition Area. Additionally, there is a 360-degree immersive theatre showcasing the transformation of Xian from the ancient times to the present day.

The Greater Bay Area (GBA) Innovation and Technology Area features various enterprises highlighting their latest achievements, such as water supply facilities and advanced robots.

The local area features a large-scale immersive art installation. Dragon dance performances have also been scheduled.

“In addition to showcasing and performing traditional Chinese culture and intangible cultural heritage, there is also a national innovation and technology exhibition, which allows citizens to celebrate the return to the motherland while also gaining a better understanding of the country's latest developments, and spending a happy and meaningful weekend,” Lee said at the launch ceremony.
