A woman was put on probation for two years on Wednesday for killing her baby girl by throwing her off a footbridge in Tsuen Wan last year.

The High Court heard that Leung Ka-yi, 42, had postpartum anxiety at the time. Her daughter was 16 days old.

She pleaded guilty to infanticide.

In sentencing, Judge Esther Toh described the case as a "tragedy", adding that Leung had suffered from "cumulative stress" because she was pregnant during the pandemic and while she was isolating, she could not visit her mother who had dementia.

Family and friends described Leung as a kind and helpful person.

Toh said more advice should be given to parents affected by postpartum anxiety. She also recommended that Leung do volunteer work with women who have the illness.
