Security Secretary Chis Tang has complained to the Wall Street Journal over an editorial criticising Hong Kong's move to offer rewards for the capture of eight national security law suspects overseas.
In a letter to the newspaper, Tang said he was appalled by the editorial titled "Hong Kong's Global Bounty Hunters", saying it shows "extreme political bias and double standards."
He said it's common practice for law enforcement officers to release information on fugitives and it's a common feature of national security laws in many countries that they have extraterritorial effect.
Tang said the editorial suggested the mainland and Hong Kong should be held to different standards from the rest of the world and this is hypocritical.
He rejected the idea that the Hong Kong government has abused local laws, alleging that the suspects have continued to engage in acts that endanger national security.
Tang stressed in the letter that endangering national security is a serious offence and the police will take necessary measures in accordance with the law to bring offenders to justice.
In May, the security chief criticised an opinion piece in the same newspaper over the Hong Kong authorities' seizure of the "Pillar of Shame" sculpture, saying that article contained groundless remarks that misled readers.
