Singer Coco Lee has died at the age of 48 after taking her own life at home, according to her family.

The Hong Kong-born singer started her career in the city in the 1990s, before breaking into the American market.

She performed her song A Love Before Time from the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon at the Oscars in 2001. The song was nominated for Best Original Song.

The Chinese version of the song won her Best Original Film Song at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 2001.

Her sisters said on social media that she had suffered from depression in recent years.

They said she was rushed to hospital after attempted suicide on Sunday, and was in a coma before passing away on Wednesday.
