Sports chief Kevin Yeung says the Kai Tak Sports Park will open by the end of next year - and it will be used when Hong Kong co-hosts the National Games in 2025.

The sports park, with three main venues, was expected to open this year but was delayed due to the Covid pandemic.

Speaking on a television programme, Yeung said Hong Kong was hoping to host eight National Games events.

He said the experience of co-hosting the games with Macau and Guangdong could result in the SAR hosting future events.

"We will continue to look for opportunities to host large-scale sports events. But whether we will bid to host the Asian Games, we will decide according to the actual situation," he said.

"International sports events have high requirements on venues and arrangements. We are hosting different events to gain more experience."

The government bought the Tokyo Olympics broadcast rights in 2021, allowing the public to watch the games free of charge on five local television stations.

Asked whether officials will do the same for the 2024 Paris Olympics, Yeung said the government had to liaise with organisers and some local institutions before making a decision.

"The Tokyo Olympics was held during the pandemic. There were some separate concerns, as companies were facing a huge burden at that time. So the government had a special arrangement and bought the broadcast rights," he said.

"Some institutions are discussing with the organisers for the Paris Games. We will keep an eye on the situation."
