The Chief Executive said on Tuesday that the road subsidence at Man Kam To checkpoint may take at least a month to repair.

The subsidence blocked northbound traffic from Hong Kong on Monday, and drivers as well as commuters have now been asked to use other checkpoints such as Heung Yuen Wai to go north.

Speaking ahead of the weekly Executive Council meeting, John Lee said he’s highly concerned about the impact of the incident on the local logistics trade.

He said his government is following up with mainland authorities.

"Of course I want it to be fixed as soon as possible. But from what I gathered, it will be about one to two months before the problem can be fixed," Lee said.

Stanley Chiang, chairman of the Lok Ma Chau China-Hong Kong Freight Association, told an RTHK programme that he expects repair works to take around six weeks.

He said the temporary suspension of northbound traffic will have limited impact on the trade as the Man Kam To checkpoint is not a key land crossing for goods.

However, he urged authorities on both sides of the border to bolster manpower at other checkpoints to deal with additional traffic coming from Man Kam To.
