The Hong Kong Streetathon will return in December after a two-year pandemic hiatus, organisers announced on Wednesday.

The event, which consists of a marathon in the heart of the city, a cross-harbour half-marathon, and 10-kilometre races across the Tseung Kwan O tunnel and its connecting bridge, will take place on December 17.

Full marathon runners will start from the Island Eastern Corridor, run through the Eastern Harbour Crossing before finishing at San Shan Road in To Kwa Wan.

Andes Leung, CEO and co-founder of event organiser RunOurCity, said he expects this year's event – which also features pre-race parties and runners’ expo – to attract a high number of overseas runners.

"For overseas runners, especially after Covid, we are more open up… this is the attraction they are looking for… They can go with their friends and family, on top of just running their preferred distance," he said.

Leung said there will also be a separate 10-kilometre race for young entrants, to encourage full-time students aged between 12 and 25 to take up long-distance running.

Public registration opens on July 20, with a total quota of 20,000. A total of 1,500 spots are reserved for overseas runners for each category.
