The Hong Kong Observatory says it might issue a Standby Signal No 1 on Saturday morning as a tropical depression could be heading this way.
The storm is currently in the vicinity of the Philippine island of Luzon and is expected to intensify as it moves in the general direction of western Guangdong and Hainan.
Whether a signal one is issued will depend on the tropical depression's movements and how it develops, the observatory said on Friday.
"Whether a higher tropical cyclone warning signal will be issued depends on the proximity of the tropical cyclone to the Pearl River Estuary and whether it will intensify significantly," it added.
