A youth think-tank on Sunday called on the government to take action towards tackling climate change by strengthening education and providing incentives to encourage low-carbon lifestyles.
Youth I.D.E.A.S., under the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, surveyed over 900 people aged between 15 and 34 and found that while a majority of respondents agreed that it was a civic responsibility to adopt a low-carbon lifestyle and prioritise environmentally-friendly products, around half of them admitted to not understanding the concepts of "sustainable consumption" and "carbon neutrality".
The survey also found that many people are hesitant about paying more for eco-friendly products and green taxes.
To encourage more people to adopt a low-carbon lifestyle, the think-tank urged the government to provide incentives such as offering more rewards for recycling and buying green products.
The think-tank also recommended that climate and environmental education be included in the school curriculum to raise awareness of climate change among pupils.
