Some people RTHK spoke to on Monday said they were making the most of the chance to skip work because of Typhoon Talim, with plans to meet friends or rest at home.

The number eight signal was expected to remain in place until at least 4pm, meaning many workers were enjoying an extra day off.

"I asked my friends to hang out because the winds aren't strong. It's good because the forecasts were out in advance and we were mentally prepared," said a man surnamed Chan.

A tourist from Beijing said it was her first time experiencing a typhoon.

"It's very dry and hot in Beijing now and the weather in Hong Kong is totally different. The rain isn't as bad as we thought. It rains for a while and then it stops," she said.

"We'll just visit wherever is open. It's alright, you get to experience different things when travelling and the typhoon is an experience."

But a couple said they already had Monday off and the typhoon had disrupted their plans.

"We wanted to sleep in, have breakfast, and then go to Shenzhen to have a massage, but we're afraid many places won't be open because of the typhoon," said one of the pair, a man surnamed Tse.

"There's nothing to do, so we thought we'd catch a movie."
