The Observatory issued the Standby Signal No.1 at 2.40 am on Tuesday to replace the Strong Wind Signal No.3, a few hours after Typhoon Talim made landfall near Zhanjiang in Guangdong. On Monday, Hong Kong hunkered down for over 15 hours after the Tropical Cyclone warning Signal No.8 was issued in the early hours.

"With Talim gradually weakening and departing, local winds will continue to weaken. The outer rainbands associated with Talim will still bring squally showers and thunderstorms to Hong Kong today. When Talim no longer poses a threat to Hong Kong, the Observatory will cancel all Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals," the Observatory said.

Earlier, the Observatory had said occasional gales were still affecting high ground and offshore waters to the south-west.

At 1.45 am on Tuesday, it said the maximum sustained winds recorded at Ngong Ping, Cheung Chau and Waglan Island in the past hour were 75, 64 and 60 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts exceeding 107, 73 and 72 kilometres per hour respectively.
