The Hong Kong Observatory said on Tuesday that there’s a 50 percent chance that the SAR may be hit by another typhoon next week, just a day after Typhoon Talim triggered the city's first T8 signal this year.

According to the forecaster, an area of low pressure over the seas east of the Philippines is expected to develop into a tropical cyclone and enter the northern part of the South China Sea early next week.

“[It] may intensify into a stronger tropical cyclone, edging closer to the vicinity of the coast of southern China. It will be windy with squally showers over the region,” the observatory wrote on its website.

Its acting senior scientific officer, Kok Mang-hin, told a radio programme that while the storm's movement remains uncertain, there may be a need for Hong Kong to issue another T8 signal in the middle of next week.

"For now, [the chance of a No.8 signal] is 50-50. Because that's about a week from now, some computer simulations expect the storm to become rather strong and come close to Hong Kong," he said.
