DAB lawmaker Holden Chow on Thursday called Britain "shameless" for passing a national security bill after criticising Hong Kong for having its own security law.

This month the UK enacted a new bill criminalising foreign interference in the country's political system, including voting and freedom of speech.

The law also requires people who exert political influence in the UK at the direction of a foreign power to register with the British government.

On an RTHK programme, Chow said the UK's move shows it is universal for nations to safeguard themselves through legislation.

"Don't make false accusations against Hong Kong's national security law, or smear and attack us when you're enacting your own national security legislation. This only shows that they [Britain] are shameless and having double standards," he said.

London claims the SAR's security law erodes human rights, but Chow said these are enshrined in the Basic Law.

Asked if Hong Kong could learn anything from the British security law, Chow said the SAR could look into how to combat espionage activities when enacting security legislation under Article 23 of the Basic Law.
