The government says it will take action to rein in oyster farmers in Deep Bay because there are too many rafts in the area and this is causing environmental and safety problems.
A working group comprising of officials from various government departments and the police will outline farming areas in the bay and activities there will be regulated.
"The significant increase in the number of oyster rafts in the vicinity of Deep Bay in recent years has affected the coastal environment and navigational safety. In this light, the government has to take necessary measures to step up the management of oyster farming activities in the area," a spokesperson said.
A survey of oyster rafts in the area has been carried out and any new ones that arrive, or existing installations that receive a ban, will be given a deadline to leave.
"Otherwise, enforcement action will be taken," a statement said.
The news was welcomed by the DAB's Steven Ho, who represents the agriculture and fisheries sector in Legco.
He called on the authorities and oyster farmers to strengthen cooperation, adding that the government should also promote the sustainable development of oyster farming.
