The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) on Thursday said the Standby Signal No.1 would remain in force this morning with Super Typhoon Doksuri maintaining a distance of over 500 kilometres from Hong Kong.

It also said it would consider the distance between Doksuri and the Pearl River Estuary to assess the latest tropical cyclone warning signal.

The Observatory said Doksuri was steadily tracking northwestwards and its associated thundery rainbands were affecting the coastal waters of eastern Guangdong, although winds here would be relatively light.

"Prevailing winds over Hong Kong will mainly be west to north-westerlies. Owing to terrain sheltering effect, the chance of strong winds generally over the territory will be relatively low, but there will be swells," it said.

The HKO said under the influence of the outer subsiding air of Doksuri, very hot weather would persist over southern China, with showers and squally thunderstorms possibly triggered by high temperatures.
