Chief Executive John Lee said on Thursday that he is looking forward to building closer ties with Malaysia, after meeting prime minister Anwar Ibrahim in Kuala Lumpur.

Lee arrived in the Malaysian capital on Thursday morning – the final leg of his Asean trip – to promote business and trade.

Writing on his Facebook, the CE said Hong Kong and Malaysia enjoy close and longstanding ties in trade and investment, adding that Malaysia is the SAR’s ninth-largest trading partner.

“We are fully committed to enhancing our relations with Malaysia and Asean, and look forward to closer ties on all fronts,” he wrote.

Lee also thanked the Malaysian government for extending the visa-free entry period for SAR passport holders to 90 days from the current 30.

“Such an arrangement provides greater entry facilitation for the SAR passport holders to Malaysia and will further enhance the connections and mutual benefits between the two places,” he said.

Lee will return to Hong Kong on Saturday after a week-long trip, during which he also visited Singapore and Indonesia.

“In the remaining three days of our visit, our delegation will continue to share Hong Kong’s good stories with our good friends in Asean.”
