President Xi Jinping has declared the opening of the 31st World University Games in Chengdu, which will run from July 28 to August 8.

During the opening ceremony at Dong'an Lake Sports Park on Friday, Xi was seen applauding and waving to delegations from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau.

Hong Kong is sending its largest-ever delegation to the games, with over 140 athletes competing in 11 events, including gymnastics, fencing, swimming, and taekwondo.

Olympic medallists Cheung Ka-long, Doo Hoi-Kem and Minnie Soo will be among those taking part in the games.
