Police on Friday arrested a 35-year-old man in Kwun Tong on suspicion of wounding, after a 13-year-old boy was allegedly struck by a teacher at an Islamic learning centre at the weekend after failing to recite a verse of the Koran.

Police said they received a report from a family member of the boy on Thursday, alleging the boy had been hit with a barehand at an institution on King’s Road in North Point on August 5.

The force said the boy, accompanied by his parents, attended Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital on Tuesday for medical treatment on his eye.

The Muslim Council of Hong Kong has proposed the introduction of a code of conduct for religious classes and the installation of security cameras in classrooms, after the alleged incident.

Police said the arrested man was being detained for further enquiries.
