Police on Monday stepped up their crackdown on jaywalkers.

Officers said they’re strengthening their enforcement action after the force recorded a spike in fatal traffic accidents this year, involving 61 deaths so far.

Police said many of the accidents stemmed from pedestrians ignoring traffic lights, using their mobile phones while crossing the road, or walking along car lanes.

The force urged people to abide by traffic regulations, saying offenders are liable to fines of up to HK$2,000 or even face prosecution.
